Cristina Azocar is on the faculty of the Department of Journalism for San Francisco State University. Azocar, also a graduate of the department, was the director of Center for the Integration and Improvement of Journalism for 10 years. Under her leadership, CIIJ grew from a regional resource to a nationally recognized leader in media and diversity by engaging many partners and individuals, creating model diversity programs for students and educators and engaging in research projects. Azocar is a past president of the Native American Journalists Association and serves on the board of the Women’s Media Center. Azocar earned her doctorate in Communication Studies at the University of Michigan in 2001.
Her research and teaching focuses on portrayals of people of color in the news. She is a member of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe. Azocar is the 2005 recipient of JACC’s Distinguished Service to Journalism Education Award.
